are you struggling in your design business?
Colleges, Universities, and Institutes are great at teaching interior design concepts, but they are terrible at teaching us about business management and development. That’s a problem because the interior design industry is changing at a faster pace than our curriculum and seasoned design professionals can keep up with. Our collective historical knowledge base is retiring and we are under constant threat of retail stores offering interior design advice, online design firms with cheap services, and the consumer shifting their purchasing power to Houzz, Amazon, Wayfair and so much more. There has GOT to be a better way to run our design businesses.
Hi there! I’m Corey. I’m a CMKBD who’s still working on that NCIDQ and my design business has gone up and down like my weight, but not my age. It has taken me years of success and failures that lead me to understand that the business of interior design is so broken that not even the two certification testing associations can crack this nut. If you have heard me and Judith A. Neary, CMKBD talk at our business courses called “Beyond Design”, you will know that we are also trying our hardest to crack the code and be profitable.
WHAT WON’T I DO
Hey, I have my weaknesses too but I have a real hard time listening to excuses. I have had to fight for everything in business including spending time at the library reading business books and building code. I won’t help you with your ego and the limitations you put on yourself because that’s a beast you need to work out in spin class. I won’t talk about the specifics of bookkeeping or profit management, because that’s Michelle Williams job at Scarlet Thread Consulting. I also won’t teach you how to sell because that’s LuAnn Nigara’s job in her course or a skill you have to learn in a sales job.
WHAT I WILL DO
I’ve been in the industry for 20 years and owned my own business of 8 years. Over my working life, I’ve held a whole bunch of different kinds jobs where I learned a lot of skills that I apply in my interior design business. I have a knack for developing a process or system, or finding a system and a process that reduces errors, saves me time, and makes my business more profitable. I will take a look at your business with you to find out where you can tighten up, reduce exposure to risks, spend more time on your own personal pursuits, and make pointed recommendations while having fun doing it.
