Design Statement: Banishment of the corner sink

The client came to me looking to renovate her kitchen with the following challenges:

  • More preparation space - currently about 48" combined liner frontage for all appliances
  • More storage - wine storage, recycling, boxes in living room and storage because there is no space
  • Energy efficiency - appliances that are updated and long lasting
  • Open the plan - the current plan is closed off, creating a partition between the whole public space of the home
  • Mirror exiting finishes - Current fireplace has a granite hearth, painted white brick in a subway pattern, existing fir flooring and built-in mantel/bookshelf surrounding

To address the concerns, I created a kitchen by:

  • Increased preparation space and created centers by removing patio door and relocating clean-up centre
  • Maximized storage with Kessebohmer Magic Corner units, drawers beside range, and a pantry unit beside refrigerator, wall cabinets to the ceiling, microwave wall cabinet, wine storage and recycling bins
  • Specified high-efficiency appliances using Electrolux induction slide-in range, Fisher & Paykel Refrigerator and Double DishDrawer
  • Removed partition wall, removed the patio door and replacing with a window, specified linoleum to minimize flooring transition from exiting hardwood to new surface
  • Specified an opaque stain for the maple cabinetry, Corian countertops, and wall tile to emphasize height and to co-ordinate with the adjoining fireplace

The successful remodel is pleasing to the eye and highly functional.
