A new material that is blacker than any black has been invented. The metamaterial absorbs any and all light. It’s made up of silver wires 35 nanometres in diameter, embedded in 1-centimetre squares of aluminium oxide, 51 micrometres thick.

The team tested their handiwork by illuminating polished and roughened versions of the material with near-infrared radiation at a wavelength of around 900 nanometres, just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum. With the radiation hitting the material at an angle less than 45 degrees from the perpendicular, they found that 20 per cent of it was reflected if the surface was polished, though the proportion dropped to less than 1 per cent if it was roughened.

I’ve been on this black & white kick lately. Everything I want to design has to have black & white. It’s a struggle, believe me, especially when clients want wood.

Living in a smaller West End space myself, I have to find unique and interesting ways to use space, and one way is with white. You can see from this 185 Sq. Ft. (17 sq. m.) apartment for sale in Gothenburg, Sweden, that the predominant use of positive and negative makes the space feel huge. What it also does, is makes the other colours pop from their background. Not to say that you can’t do this with another colour, say the Black Apartment, but you can see how the white makes you feel fresh and crisp, while an opposite use of black as the primary colour would make you feel sexy and sleek.

I’m off to plan a white shirt rebellion.

I’ve blogged about this place before, but it’s Cindy Gallops apartment in Chelsea, New York. THIS APARTMENT IS A DREAM! I mean, who doesn’t want a Gucci chain-saw, surrounded by high gloss black, in the old YMCA’s men’s swimming pool and change area!?! Who?!?

I mean, the woman has the Gucci Gator (real, dipped in gold) people!! And her shoes run the length of the apartment.
